Learn more about the history of the city of Kef, a millennia-old city with a rich tangible and intangible cultural heritage, at the Sidi Ali El Mlaihi Centre.
The Sidi Ali El Mlaihi Centre has been completely restored and is dedicated to interpreting the history of the city of Kef.
Located in the heart of the medina, near the Ghriba, the Zaouïa Sidi Ali El Mlaihi is known as the cemetery of the nobles, or the ‘Tourba des Beys’ because it still houses the tomb of Ali Turki, who died at the end of the 17th century and who, during his lifetime, had obtained the governorship of the Kef region and settled there. He married a woman from the Chennoufi tribe and they had a son, Mohamed, the father of Ali Pasha. He then married a second wife, a descendant of the Cherni tribe, who bore him a son, Hussein, the founder of the Husseinite dynasty that ruled Tunisia from 1705 until the proclamation of the republican regime in 1957.
The Sidi Ali El Mlaihi area is part of our built heritage tour, which uses twelve QR code terminals to recount the history of the iconic monuments of the city of Kef, witnesses to the richness of the civilisations, cultures and religions that have passed through this region over thousands of years.
