As part of an artistic workshop exploring heritage, visual artist Sonia Kallel worked with around twenty Year 7 pupils from the Habib Bourguiba public primary school in El Kef in May and June 2022.

Through a unique sensory approach, this art workshop aimed to question, engage in dialogue, sharpen and nurture the participants’ view and thinking about what heritage is and what constitutes it today.

What does Kef mean today as heritage for children aged 11 to 12? How do these children, individually and collectively, describe themselves in relation to their environment through what they identify as heritage?

These and many other questions were addressed in a sensitive manner and through the five senses during the art workshop designed by Sonia Kallel and conducted in May and June 2022 at the Habib Bourguiba public primary school in Kef with mediation officer Aurélie Machghoul and teacher Kawthar Khalil.

The artist’s approach consists of creating a context conducive to listening and empathy, then questioning our relationship with the city: its sounds, smells, inhabitants, monuments, traces, legends, etc.

It all starts from the premise that we do not take enough time to observe, that we do not sufficiently develop our sensitivity to the world and our capacity for wonder.

It is not a question of imposing a constructed aesthetic vision of cultural heritage, but of deconstructing, “de-conditioning” our gaze in order to listen, smell, taste, see and touch individually in a relationship with the world that activates the intimate, so that we can then rebuild, together, a meaningful collective.

Beyond the desire to enable these young teenagers to rediscover their immediate environment in a different way, we hope that this workshop has also allowed them to express themselves and poeticise their world.
