Dar el Khobz, the living bread museum, is a cultural, social and tourist space open to all, bringing together culinary, educational, digital and commercial activities to discover the heritage of wheat growing and its culinary practices in the Kef region.
This region in north-western Tunisia has been considered the breadbasket of Tunisia for thousands of years.

Dar el Khobz in Kef has been co-created by Museum Lab with women bakers who are holders of this traditional heritage, and young women from Kef who are experiencing professional difficulties.
The 1st phase of Dar el Khobz’s implementation offers a space for the sale of breads and cakes specific to Kef, a cultural circuit on the history of wheat from Africa to north-western Tunisia from Neolithic times to Antiquity (see page Wheat Circuit), an anthropological discovery of the skills and traditions associated with men’s agricultural work and women’s domestic work, as well as culinary experiences along the bakers’ stalls in the medina of Kef. The granting of a production support fund has made it possible to work with women to restore and renovate five stalls in the medina of Kef, and to build the capacity of young graduates in cultural mediation.
In collaboration with experts, the long-term aim of this project is to increase the means of production and income of these women bakers through participation in a sustainable social economy model.

Like all Museum Lab projects, Dar el Khobz is conceived as an inclusive, dynamic and sustainable cultural and tourist offer based on heritage, and a vector of local economy and economic and social empowerment for the people of Kef.
