Discover Greco-Roman mythology and the battle of the hero Hercules against Antaeus, based on a fragment of sculpture found in the town of Sousse. These adventures of the gods and heroes populated the imaginations of the ancients.
Using your smartphone, augmented reality allows you to superimpose a three-dimensional model of the complete sculpture in its original state onto the restored and reconstituted fragment.
The mobile application also lets you discover the history of this statue, the stories associated with each of the 12 labors of Hercules through an interactive map of the Mediterranean basin, and a brief history of the Sousse Archaeological Museum.
Thanks to the work of a team of restorers, archaeologists, mediation experts and fine arts students, this archetypal Hercules and Antaeus can now be brought to life.
This “Hercules and Antaeus” augmented reality project is the culmination of a hackathon on the theme of enhancing heritage through new technologies, led by young graduates on the initiative of our Museum Lab association at several Tunisian sites in 2019.
The hackathon consisted of training courses (archaeology, mediation, development with 3D modeling, working with textures…) given by heritage and mediation experts to around thirty young people from “Museum Lab Connexions” around five heritage enhancement projects leading to innovative devices created during 2019 in Sousse, Dougga, Kerkouane, El Kef and Tunis.
At the beginning of December 2019, the five teams of the five prototypes competed against each other, followed by a free exhibition of these devices in mid-December at sites, museums and historic centers.
